Satanic Temple Loses Lawsuit Against Idaho’s Pro-Life Law

Idaho’s law protecting preborn babies from abortions does not turn women into “slaves” or violate their religious liberty, a federal judge affirmed recently.

The Satanic Temple brought a lawsuit against the state’s pro-life law based on farfetched legal theories that it violated the 13th Amendment’s prohibition on slavery. It also argued the legislation violated religious freedom laws.

Judge David Nye once again ruled against the Satanists’ claim, affirming a past decision that they have no standing since they cannot prove any of their members have been harmed by the state’s law. An appeals court asked Nye if there was anything the Satanists could do to amend their complaint, but the judge once again ruled they could not.

Even if the Satanists could establish standing, their arguments “were not cognizable” and suffered from “sheer unworkability,” the district judge wrote in his Nov. 10 decision.

Nye said the Satanist group tried “to shoehorn its disagreements with Idaho’s abortion statutes into constitutional claims,” which amounted to “trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.”

“It simply does not work,” he concluded.

The decision drew praise from Attorney General Raúl Labrador.

“Idaho’s pro-life laws protect both mothers and unborn children, and this decision confirms those protections are constitutionally sound,” Labrador stated in a news release.

“The Satanic Temple’s attempt to manufacture constitutional violations out of disagreement with Idaho’s values has been rejected at every level,” he stated. “We’ve defended Idaho’s laws through every stage of this litigation, and we will continue protecting the right of Idaho’s elected representatives to defend life.”

This is the latest loss for the Satanists. A similar lawsuit in Indiana also failed in 2023 on the same grounds. Likewise, the Satanists lost their battle against Texas’ pro-life laws. The Satanic Temple is desperate to protect the killing of innocent preborn babies in the womb, but it continues to flail around, searching for a sympathetic judge to take up its wild theories.

The truth, though, is that no one has a “right” to kill preborn babies in the womb and states are correct to pass laws that protect their tiniest citizens. The Satanists are correct in arguing abortion and slavery are linked, but the reality is that the Satanic Temple, like slave owners, has the immoral idea that some human beings are less deserving of protection than others.

Pro-lifers, like slavery abolitionists in the 19th century, recognize that all human life is deserving of protection, no matter the race, sex, or circumstances of their life.
